Research

The OR Society has a Research Committee which plays a key role in shaping and supporting the OR research landscape. It helps the Society, and its members stay informed about research developments, opportunities, and challenges—whether through the website or other channels. The committee ensures that OR research has a strong voice in national conversations, advocating effectively within the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences, the KE Hub and other national infrastructure, and supporting funding for OR through regular conversations with EPSRC and other funders of OR research, providing strategic level support for the Research Excellence Framework (REF), and inputting into other initiatives as they arise.

The committee supports the OR community in developing high-quality, relevant research and innovation, making it easier to access funding and achieve real-world impact. It also strengthens knowledge exchange, ensuring that insights flow between research and practice to benefit both. A crucial part of this is nurturing the next generation of OR researchers by supporting the Early Career Researcher (ECR) Network. The committee is also committed to promoting Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), ensuring these principles are embedded in OR research discussions.

The committee meets on a quarterly basis and is composed of members with significant national and international research experience.

Resources for Researchers

Operational research encompasses a wide range of problem-solving techniques and methods applied in the pursuit of improved decision-making. Research in OR, therefore, spans theoretical developments underpinning OR techniques through to research on practical applications. Consequently, OR research is often undertaken in collaboration between academia and industry. You will find the following:

The Researchers Database

Our Researchers Database lists the interests and expertise of academics and practitioners by their research methods and application areas. It is a highly useful resource for:

  • Those considering a career in research
  • Connecting with researchers to work on collaborative projects
  • Facilitating networking between academics and practitioners

We also have some helpful resources from experienced OR researchers:

To further support the ECR pipeline, we have launched a dedicated webpage where PhD and Postdoctoral opportunities can be promoted free of charge. Opportunities must adhere to a set of criteria, and approved listings will be promoted via ORS channels. The initiative will run as a 6-month pilot, free of charge, and we hope it will be a valuable resource for the community.
