Interested in playing a key role in shaping the future of the OR Society?
Dr Colette Fletcher, Executive Director
Then you should consider joining the OR Society’s General Council (GC). The Council and its supporting committees play a vital role in providing scrutiny and challenge of our activity, keeping Board and management well-informed about current issues and opportunities in OR, and ensuring our plans turn into action.
GC consists of 36 Society members, including representatives from the Regional Societies, Special Interest Groups and National members. The Society’s five officers also sit on GC and, together with up to six additional GC members, serve as trustees on the Society’s Board. GC members typically serve up to two terms of three years each.
Joining GC offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with dedicated professionals from across the OR community. You'll gain insights into the Society’s core activities, including publications, events, education and outreach, while helping to steer its future. It’s a chance to develop your governance, strategy and leadership experience whilst connecting with dedicated individuals from all corners of the operational research community.
For early and mid-career professionals, it’s a powerful way to broaden your experience and grow your leadership skills. For those later in their career, it's an opportunity to stay connected with the profession and continue making a meaningful contribution.
The role involves attending two Council meetings and two subcommittee meetings each year, which are usually held online and occasionally in a hybrid format, with the opportunity to visit us at our Birmingham or London offices. Additional responsibilities, such as reviewing papers and following up on action items, can usually be completed flexibly. Overall, members should anticipate dedicating around 6–8 days annually.
