A new discussion from the IMA Journal of Management Mathematics considers the progress made towards equality, diversity and inclusion in management mathematics and Operational Research, while examining the challenges that still remain.
Professor Aris Syntetos, Editor-in-Chief of the IMA Journal of Management Mathematics, and Professor Antuela Tako are joined by Dr Heather Tewkesbury, President of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, and Professor Sanja Petrovic, President of the OR Society.
Together, they consider the impact of gender bias across mathematics and Operational Research, the importance of representation and inclusion, and the role professional societies can play in creating more equitable opportunities.
The discussion also looks at practical steps that organisations, universities and employers can take to support lasting cultural and structural change across academia and industry.
It accompanies the journal editorial, Exposing gender bias in the mathematics and operational research professions, written by Professor Antuela Tako and Professor Corina Constantinescu.
The editorial examines how gender bias continues to affect recruitment, career progression, professional recognition and retention, and calls for meaningful action to address the structural and cultural barriers that remain within both professions.
Members of the Operational Research community are encouraged to watch the discussion, read the editorial and contribute to the wider conversation about building a more inclusive future for mathematics and Operational Research.
