First President of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences

The Academy of Mathematical Sciences (AcadMathSci) has announced the appointment of Prof. Alison Etheridge OBE FRS as its inaugural President, effective from 17 June 2024.

Alison is a Professor in Probability at the University of Oxford and is known for her expertise in stochastic processes and extensive leadership in the mathematical sciences community. Alison brings a wealth of experience to the position and has served in key leadership roles, including as President of the international Institute of Mathematical Statistics, Head of the Department of Statistics at the University of Oxford and is currently on the Council of the Royal Society.

Many of you will already be familiar with Alison and her work and may remember her from last year’s Blackett Memorial Lecture where she presented the plans for the Academy.

Nigel Campbell, Chair of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences, said “I am delighted that Alison Etheridge will be the Academy’s first President. Her track record speaks for itself, in research, in community leadership, and in her ability to bring people together. She is well-placed to be President for our crucial first 3 years, as we seek to bring the Academy fully into being, with community support, and secure DSIT and other funding.”

Alison’s presidency marks a significant milestone for AcadMathSci as it establishes itself as a prominent voice in the mathematical sciences landscape.
